LICENCE GRANTED
Air Service To Stewart Island SOUTHLAND COMPANY PA INVERCARGILL, Feb. 23. A licence to operate an amphibian air service between Invercargill and Stewart Island has been granted by the Air Department to Amphibian Airways (Southlands. A twin-engined Douglas Dolphin, which will be used on the service, will be flown to New Zealand about Easter, and the service will probably be in operation next October or November. It is expected that a tri-weekly service will be maintained between Invercargill and Stewart Island. Other services will be conducted to various parts of Southland—the We-tern Sounds, Queenstown and the southern lakes and the glacier area in Westland.
Holiday-makers will be able to reach Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island, within 20 minutes of take-off from Invercargill airport. The return fare, yet to be fixed, will be about 355. At present the only communication between Invercargill and Stewart Island is by an 18-mile rail journey to Bluff and a two-hour ferry service across the straits.
