A motion of congratulation to Mr A. G. Neill on his recent appointment as King’s Counsel was passed at a meeting of the Peninsula County Council yesterday. Dr Vilikesa T. Ramaqa will leave Dunedin today on his return to Fiji. He has completed a nine weeks’ course in anaesthetics at the Dunedin Public Hospital.

Congratulations were extended at last night’s meeting of the Otago Hospital Board to Sister S. Beresford, matron of the Tuapeka Hospital, on her recent award of the 0.8. E.

Professor George Knight, accompanied by Mrs Knight, will leave Dunedin for Australia on February 1 to give a course of lectures to the School of Theology in Melbourne and to the Ormond College. Mr Duncan F. Bauchop, of Leyland Motors, Ltd., retired at the end of December, and Mr J. Tatham, who succeeds him, took over his appointment from that date.

Brigadier J. T. Burrows, D. 5.0., E.D., relinquishes the appointment of commander of the Third Infantry Brigade on being appointed to a commission in the New Zealand Regular Force, states a defence notice published in last night’s Gazette. He holds the new appointment in the rank of colonel. He was formerly rector of the Waitaki Boys’ High School, and resigned recently to take up an army appointment. Squadron Leader G. S. A. Stevenson, D.F.C., of Auckland, who was formerly in command of the RNZAF General Purpose Flight at Ohakea, has been appointed officer commanding the administrative wing, Whenuapai Station, says a statement issued by the Air Force Headquarters. He succeeds Wing Commander T. J. Mac Lean De Lange, D.F.C., of Auckland. who has been appointed to the New Zealand Joint Services Liaison Staff, Melbourne.

The late Mr William Begg had been a keen advocate for the advancement of the Port of Otago, and his wide experience and thorbugih knowledge of the board's affairs were of inestimable value, said the chairman of the O.tago Harbour Board, Mr W. R. Clarke, moving at a meeting of the board last night that the services given by Mr Begg should be placed on record. Mr Clarke said that Mr Begg had served on the board for 18J years—from 1929 until 1947. The Mayor of Christchurch, Mr E. H Andrews, has accepted an invitation to attend the goodwill conference of Australian lord mayors at Melbourne. He will leave Christchurch on February 4. and will return three weeks later. He will also visit Sydney and Adelaide, and possibly Canberra, Newcastle and Brisbane.
