SECOND WIN IN RACE

GOLDEN SPA’S WELLINGTON STAKES

For the second year in succession Golden Spa upset calculations in the Wellington Stakes when he accounted for the warm favourite. Correspond, on Saturday. Last year he took a narrow decision from a hot favourite in Gold Script. Golden Spa has a grand record for consistency, having had 7 wins and 11 minor placings in his 21 starts in just over 12 months. His stake earnings were increased by £I3OO after Saturday’s success, and his total is now £7IOO.

He is a three-year-old colt by Gold Nib from Virgina Waters, by Verbius from the imported mare Virginal, by Lonawand from Chelys, by Sir Visto from Chelandry, by Goldfinch. Virginia Waters is also the dam of another winner in Te Paerata. Virginal is a half-sister to Simper, the foundation mare of the wellknown Southland Chelandrv Stud, and dam of the winners of more than £32,000. Simper was the great grand-dam of Flight, champion Australian mare of recent years and winner of over £30,000. Chelys was a half-sister to Dark Flight (dam of The Night Patrol, winner of 19 races in England)) and Chersonese (dam of the champion. Heroic). Chelandry won the One Thousand Guineas, and she was the darn of six winners of over £42,000. Virginia Waters also had progeny in Australia, where Te Paerata was raced. Golden Spa has some of the best staying blood in the country behind him, and it is likely that he will develop more staying ability later. He was one of the first of Gold Nib's progeny, and he cost 400gns at the national yearling sales two years ago. A colt by Balloch from Virginia Waters will be sold at Trentham next Thursday, and it is sure to meet keen competition.
