DUNEDIN TROTTING CUP

SPORTING

Whipster Among The Early Favourites PLUNDER BAR MAY IMPROVE There is a glamour about a Cup race that is not associated with any other race, and the Dunedin Trotting Cup Handicap, which will be run at Forbury Park on Saturday, will no doubht attract a very large attendance. With a 4min 23sec class, the race has drawn a number of horses who are eligible for the New Zealand Cup. Captain Gailliard, one of those on the limit, has reached a place in five of his eight starts this season, including a second to Checkmate over a mile and five furlongs at the Canterbury Park meeting this month, and a second to Attack at the same meeting over a similar distance. In his first seven races this season Gantree won five of them and filled second place in another. His most recent win was in the Hayward Handicap, of one mile and five furlongs, at Addington in November. He was followed home by Trustee and On Approval, to each of whom he gave 12 yards. Whipster has been very consistent this season with three wins and four placings in eight starts, his last win being over a mile and five furlongs, at Hutt Park in November, when he beat Victory Globe and Prirfce Hall. He will lack nothing on the score of horsemanship if he is driven by J. B. Pringle. V. Alborn holds a good hand with Maori Home and Dundee Sandy. Maori Home’s best recent performance was his third to Checkmate and Captain Gailliard over a mile and five furlongs at the Canterbury Park meeting. After running third to Globe Direct and Plunder Bar over a mile and a-quarter at New, Brighton, Dundee Sandy was. taken to Auckland and in three starts collected a second, a third and a win. From 24 yards he won the President’s Handicap, of two miles, from Single Direct 48yds and Sprayman scr. He went 4min 17 2-ssec. The performances of Monagh Leagh, Aberhall, Knave of Diamonds, and Maudeen this season do not inspire confidence in their chances, but Plunder Bar is entitled to consideration. At the New Brighton meeting he finished within a neck of Victory Globe over a mile and a-quarter and in the Auckland Trotting Cup he was third to Captain Sandy and Dundee Sandy. He will meet Dundee Sandy on 12 yards better terms on Saturday. The early favourites are likely to be Whipster, Gantree, and Plunder Bar.
