mrs m. c. l. McDonald
One of the pioneers of croquet in Otago, Mrs Maggie Cox Lindsay McDonald, died in Dunedin on Monday at the age of 74. Mrs McDonald was the widow of Mr John McDonald, who was Mayor of the city in 1908-9 and who died four years ago. She was the daughter of the late Mr William Prictor. a well-known bookseller, of Dunedin, and was born in the city. Mrs McDonald died while assisting in the controlling of the South Island croquet tournament. She was eight times president of the Punga Croquet Club and was president of the Otago Croquet Association in 1940-41 and secretary for the ten-year period 19301940. Mrs McDonald also served for two years on the New Zealand Croquet Council, once as vice-president of the council. She was an active member of the Otago Women’s Club. Mrs McDonald had no children.
Players attending the prize-giving ceremony at the South Island Croquet Championships yesterday stood for a moment in silence as a tribute to Mrs McDonald.
Mrs McDonald was the donor of the McDonald Cup, for levels singles competition in the Otago championships, and the McDonald Shield for Central Otago B Grade teams competition.
