FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tago H)atli> ©tines DUNEDIN, JANUARY 18. 1865. The washings of the companies at Hamilton have turned out very successful. The United Company has turned out 300ozs and the Perseverance Company 2500 z. The results give very good wages to the proprietors. Shares in the United Company are held for £3OO.

At the Sowburn a few evenings ago, Mr Charles Hubbard's store was entered and several boxes of papers were ransackgd. The thieves entered Mrs Hubbard's room and took from under her bed a gold chain. They did not succeed in finding the cash box, not suspecting that it would have been placed under the head of a child.

The schooner Mary Van Every was loaded last week at Port Chalmers jetty wdth numerous blocks of stone intended for the top finishing of Dog Island lighthouse. The stones which were cut and finished at the quarry, were taken from a bed of rock recently opened' at the approach to the Port Chalmers recreation ground. This stone has been previously noticed as being very superior—so much so that it has been selected as most suitable for such a building as the Dog Island lighthouse. It is expected that it will come into much more general use, with the effect of increasing trade and improving the exchequer of the Town Board, if the members would only bestir themselves in acquiring possession of the quarry and making known its full value.
