SHIELD PERFORMANCES

AVERAGES OF PLAYERS SUTCLIFFE’S REMARKABLE FIGURES This year's Plunket Shield averages fully demonstrate B. Sutcliffe’s outstanding batting ability. He leads the field with the excellent figures of, 113.80. His nearest rival is his opening partner on the English tour, V. J. Scott, who returned two good performances, scoring a century against Otago and also against Wellington. His average is 81.00. S. A. McVicar, of Wellington, although he played in only the one match, against Otago, finished third with 78.C0. Other good averages are J. Hardstaff 67.25, J. R. Reid 58.20, W. M. Wallace 57.50, and W. A. Hadlee 50.75. An Otago player has also headed the bowling averages. He is A. M. Moir, who bowled impressively in his first Plunket Shield match, securing four wickets at an average of 13.75. The most meritorious performance, however, was that of Guy Overton, who bowled consistently throughout the series to take the most wickets, 17, at a cost of 19 runs. apiece. There were better averages than Overton’s, and these were all returned by the strong Wellington bowling side. J. R. Reid 14.10, R. McK. Murray 14.61, G. F. Cresswell 17.00, and E. W. Dempster 17.00 all bowled extremely well. Although the competition was not close, the series was marked by several new cricketing records. Sutcliffe’s record score of 355 was the outstanding feature, and besides this a new record for the fifth wicket was established by Sutcliffe and Haig, as well as the highest aggregate for a Plunket Shield series, also recorded by the brilliant left-hander. R. McK. Murray, of Wellington, by performing the hat trick against Otago, secured the inclusion of his name in the first-class, cricket records of New Zealand. , The averages of each province are set out below:—
