WELL-BRED STAYER

WALNUT HALL HAS BRIGHT FUTURE Walnut Hall recorded an outstanding performance to win the Gore Trotting Club Handicap on Monday in the Southland record time of 4min 21 4-ssec. The track was slightly affected by rain during the day, and Walnut Hall, as well as losing some ground at the start, was forced to cover some extra ground over the last mile. He is a grand stayer, and should more than hold his own on the metropolitan courses. Walnut Hall is a six-year-old Dillon Hall gelding from Play Voyage, an unraced Happy Voyage mare tracing back to Topsy, dam of the 1914 New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, Win Soon. Topsy was a thoroughbred mare and many recent winners can be traced to her, including good performers in Willowbank, Lady Averil, Sea Born and Acropolis.

It is reported that Pardon Me has broken a bone in a foot and she is unlikely to race again. She won at Oamaru in October and appeared to be in for a good season. A nine-year-old mare by Swordsman from Troop Carrier, she should prove a valuable brood mare.
