CAPTAIN SANDY’S WIN
SECOND AUCKLAND CUP PROSPECT FOR MELBOURNE CHAMPIONSHIP For the second year in succession the Oamaru owned and trained Captain Sandy has triumphed in the Auckland Trotting Cup and he looks to have bright prospects in the £IO,OOO final of the InterDominion championships at Melbourne in February. In the Cup on Tuesday Captain Sandy was not hurried over the first part of the journey and with a round to go he ran into third place behind Commander Scott and Single Direct, who had been well placed throughout. The order was the same into the straight, with Plunder Bar, Dundee Sandy and Sprayman also handy. Captain Sandy fought on in his usual bulldog-like manner and he took a neck decision from Dundee Sandy with Plunder Bar half - a length away, and Single Direct close up fourth. The back marker, Loyal Nurse, made her run about the half mile post, but she failed to run on. Captain Sandy, who has been driven m most of his successes by J. Bryce, jun., one of New Zealand's leading horsemen for mnay years, has won £17,849 in stakes for J. M. Bain in just over three years’ racing. Last season he was the leading stake-earner with £10,729 and it looks as though he may exceed that total before the end of the present season, especially if he is taken to Australia. Captain Sandy is only a sven-year-old, but his opportunities will be limited from now on with free-for-all events most likely to be his target. He is by Sandydale, a prominent American-bred sire, from the unraced mare in Waikaura.
