FIREBALL PHENOMENON
NO ACCEPTED THEORY OF CAUSE PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 28. The fireball phenomenon described by Appleby residents was by no means without precedent, said officials of the Weather Office, Wellington. Similar freak electrical effects during thunderstorms had been reported before, but there seemed to be no generally accepted theory of the cause of them. , , The occurrence at Appleby camt. within the textbook definition of globe lightning. Such lightning, it had been suggested, was a “residual of tne chemical action of a previous intense flash upon constituents of the air.
The City Fire Brigade attended to two chimney fires yesterday. The first call was to Mechanic street, North-East Valley, at 1.27 p.m., and the second to Oakland street. Anderson’s Bay, at 8.7 p.m.
