LESS DIFFICULT

NEW YEAR SHOPPING ANOTHER LONG WEEK-END With the experience gained last week as a guide, housewives should not have so much difficulty with their holiday catering over the coming week-end. In addition, shopping conditions will be a little easier for there will not be the same demand for “ Christmas luxury lines ” and, further, many more people will be away from the city. This last factor has entered into the calculations of the retailers of staple foodstuffs—the bakers for instance, do not find that there is the same demand for bread at the New Year as before Christmas. This is due to the fact that many people leave for holidays in the country on Boxing Day and take along a supply of bread to tide them over for a day or two. Nevertheless,, the bake which will start today will still be well above normal. After the rush of trading last week, the city streets were comparatively quiet yesterday. The replenishment of the larder was the important item for most people, while others took steps to remedy unexepected shortages in their liquid refreshment and cigarette stocks. “ It was surprising how many greeting cards we sold today,” ■ one city stationer said. “A lot of people must have received cards which they had not expected and were rushing to reciprocate.” Other people will doubtless take advantage of New Year telegrams to offer belated greetings.
