“CARETAKER CABINET” ACHIEVES RESULTS
CAIRO. Egypt’s Prime Minister, Hussein Sirry Pasha, told newsmen here that more was achieved in a single meeting of his present all-independent “caretaker ” Cabinet than during the whole three months’ existence of the previous all-party coalition government. Sirry Pasha said his present colleagues were giving all their time and energy to matters of interest to the country, whereas those of the previous Cabinet were wholly absorbed in political party matters, which meant that he had to waste time trying to make peace between them. Asked whether this implied that he preferred dictatorial to democratic rule, Sirry Pasha replied he would prefer a benevolent dictator to rule the country for 50 years provided that he would not become a despot, but history tells us that never has there been a benevolent dictator who did not soon become a despot and disastrous to his country. Democratic rule, however defective it may be, is a thousand times better than the rule of one man, even if he is to introduce one thousand reforms, he added.—Reuter.
