OVER FIVE MILLION
UNEMPLOYMENT IN AMERICA FORECAST FOR NEXT YEAR NZPA—Copyright WASHINGTON, Dec. 26. The American Federation of Labour forecast today that unemployment in the United States in 1950 would probably reach 5,100,000. This would be about 1,000,000 higher than in 1949, and would be caused mainly by the flow of new workers into the labour market. The union said it would ask for substantial wage increases, which it said could be met by employers cutting production costs through more efficient management and by taking less profit.
