CENTURY OF PROGRESS
VARIED PROGRAMME CANTERBURY CELEBRATIONS The New Zealand bowling tournament at Christchurch, on January 9 will be the first event on the large programme which has been arranged to celebrate Canterbury’s centenary. The celebrations will be similar to those held in Dunedin and will include a replica of the landing at Lyttelton on December 16 followed by a procession in the afternoon and a ball in the evening. A replica of the breakfast and ball held on board the Randolph has also been arranged. The fireworks display in February, 1951, is expected to attract as much interest as that held in Dunedin. Numerous Dominion sporting events have been arranged and one of the most spectacular should be the New Zealand-England speedway test and the New Zealand centennial galloping and trotting cups. A literary competition for plays, short stories and essays has been arranged and entries will close on March 31, 1950. There is also a competition for musical compositions. An exhibition of old masters and other paintings will be held in the MacDougall Art Gallery during the whole of the celebrations as will the Early Settlers’ display in the Canterbury museum. A living artists’ exhibition has also been planned. Film lovers will have an opportunity of seeing an international documentary film festival showing some of the latest films released. It will be held in October, 1950. An international salon of photography will also be provided in the same month. There will be an international philatelic exhibition in November and the New Zealand Broadcasting Service orchestral season will last a week during the same month. Numerous band contests have also been arranged and national highland dancing championships will probably attract competitors from all parts of New Zealand. Numerous annual conferences have been provided for during the year and, to the present, the programme contains more than 200 fixtures.
