SHOPS REOPEN
SALE OF FOODSTUFFS HOUSEWIVES’ PROBLEMS Many of the housewife’s problems of catering for her family will end temporarily to-day with the re-open-ing of many shops in Dunedin. Butchers, grocers, bakers and fruiterers will be open today for the first time in four days. As the New Year holiday closing will involve another four days at the end of the week, they will probably have a busy time. Many factories and offices have closed down for three weeks, but essential commodities will be available. Tobacconists are observing the same holidays as retailers and, like hairdressers, will reopen today. Sales of petrol will resume normally until Saturday, and stations will be open for three hours on Monday morning. Tuesday will again be a normal day. One of the worst problems besetting housewives during the Christmas holidays was their inability to keep meat fresh. Many of those without refrigerators were forced to throw meat away after the warm week-end and resort to tinned foods.
