NARROW ESCAPES
NORWEGIAN SHIP CATCHES FIRE N ZP A—Copyright NEW YORK, Dec. 23. Forty-two sleeping members of the crew, including two stewardesses, narrowly escaped early today when 'Are raged through the Norwegian freighter Fern Bay at Boston. The fire caused damage of 500,000 dollars. Firemen controlled it after a four-hour battle, during which the 4,900-ton ship was towed to midstream from its berth. The radio operator suffered serious cuts inflicted by glass blown from portholes by two explosions. The captain and a steward leaped through portholes 30 feet to the water as the flames reached their cabins. The' fire apparently began in the engine room. The Fern Bay was commissioned oflly last March. • -
