CHURCHILL STAKES

SPORTING

Second Day Of Cup Meeting

EXCELLENCY IN FORM

From the Sporting Editor

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 25

The rain that started to fall late yesterday afternoon did not last long and the weather has been very warm to-day; consequently the going for the second day of the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton to-morrow will be very hard.

Bhutan, Golden Spa, and The Laird will not be started in the Churchill Stakes, the running of which is expected to be the feature of the card.

Excellency worked freely when given pace work on the plough this morning, and Beaumaris looks in grand order. Frances has arrived, and in all probability will be ridden by A. I. Powell. No decision has yet been made concerning Gold Strike’s programme, but there is a possibility that he will be started in the Otaio Plate. Page’s Raid has been taken out of the High-weight Handicap, in which an unlikely starter is Mr Buzz. Sharessa will not be started in the Pioneer Handicap and Dunkirk may also drop out and be started on the final day.

No scratchings have yet been announced for the Oaks and it is expected that the full field of 12 will go to the post, none of whom have anything in the way of staying form, but Sweet Spray, the winner of the Stewards’ Handicap, is a sister to Sweet Nymph who was a good stayer as a three-year-old. The following horses are likely to be among those to receive strong support. 10.32: Middleton High-weight Handicap.— Redlo, Bren Gun, Primitive. 11.17: Churchill Stakes. —Excellency, Beaumaris, Frances. 12.2 : Pioneer Handicap. —Pastel, Brutus, Dark Courage. 12.47: Seymour Handicap. —Resolute, Robin’s Song, Adios. 1.32: New Zealand Oaks Stakes. —Sweet Spray, Super Snipe, Golden Link. 2.17: Metropolitan Handicap. —Liebestraum, Eriskay, Maryburn. 3.2 : Otaio Plate.— Valley Gold, Bragden, Show Boy. 3.47: Jockey Club Handicap. —Ballochmyle, Pierre, Magical.
