TURKISH DEFENCE
Protection Against Russia
Efforts For Friendship Pact Fail, ; B{JP—NZPA—Copyright
Rec. 10.10 p.m. ANKARA, Nov. 24. Ankara Radio last night told Moscow that the real reason for Turkey's heavy defence expenditure was the threatening policy of Russia. It was replying to Moscow Radio’s allegations that Turkey was paying heavily for defence “to benefit the United States."
Ankara Radio said that after the war Russia did not want to maintain its good neighbour policy with Turkey and did not want to renew a friendship treaty. Instead, Russia asked for military bases and opened a war of nerves. “Therefore, we maintain high defence costs to protect ourselves from becoming a satellite. The responsibility for this expenditure rests on Russia.’’ '
