PROTEST TO GOVERNMENT
ACQUISITION OF MARKET GARDEN LAND
PA WELLINGTON. Nov. 17. The New Zealand Fruit and Produce Merchants and Auctioneers’ Federation to-day sent a message to the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, protesting against the proposed acquisition by the Auckland Harbour Board of market garden land at Avondale.
The message reads: “ Our federation strongly protests against the proposed action by the Auckland Harbour* Board to take a large area of market garden land on Rosebank road, Peninsula. We have consistently opposed the acquisition of market gardening properties for housing and other purposes, as fresh vegetables and fruit are absolutely essential to the health and food supply of the community. We contend that the supply of vegetables from the Avondale market gardens would be invaluable to the city of Auckland in the event of' an emergency.”
