UNLIMITED MARKET
PRIMARY PRODUCE FOR BRITAIN
NEW ZEALAND’S OPPORTUNITY PA WAIPUKURAU, Nov. 17. “ Britain needs a further 750,000 tons of meat to give her people a decent ration and has searched the world for additional supplies,” stated Mr Holland at Waipukurau this afternoon. “ The sheep population in Britain has decreased since the war by about 30 per cent, and the country’s population is increasing rapidly, while, due to the necessity for importifig fodder from dollar areas, it is taking about six months longer to fatten cattle.”
New Zealand had an unmatched opportunity to expand her primary production, and logically enough the Dominion could anticipate great prosperity provided the country looked to first things first, said Mr Holland, when referring to. the tendency of the present Labour legislation to favour city areas at the expense of rural districts. Argentine to-day consumed 80 per cent, of its own production, and as it was becpming more mechanised it did not offer the same competition. Exports of primary produce from Australia were tending to fall due to the rising internal demand. It therefore pointed to the necessity for 1 New Zealand to increase her exports to Britain, which offered an unlimited market.
Mr Holland was accorded an attentive hearing bv am audience of about 500, there being few interjections.
