WIDER AVAILABILITY
NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER COUPONS SUPPORT FROM DUNEDIN The secretary of the Automobile Association, Otago, Mr P. F. Harre, when asked last night to comment on the opinions expressed by the North Island Motor Union, replied that his association was fully in accord with the union. The question of wider availability of petrol coupons was one which had been broached to the Government on several occasions during the last two ,or three yeafs by the Automobile Association, and now that there were plentiful supplies of petrol within the country it should be possible to overlap coupons for three months from November and Decernber. * Mr Harre emphasised that a different position prevailed when petrol was in short supply, as during the war years. Overlapping of coupons their would have thrown a heavy burden on petrol retailers, who might have been left with no supplies during the main holiday exodus. This, of course, would have defeated the purpose of petrol rationing if carried to an extreme. Many motorists would be carrying spare petrol around with them in their cars, sometimes in unsatisfactory containers in the back seat, Mr Harre said. This was a dangerous practice.
