Rec. 9 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 17. Miss Judy Burke, of Taranaki, today won her first-round match in the Junior Singles of the New South Wales lawn tennis championships when she defeated the prominent Sydney player, Miss Joan Faulkner, 6—o, C—4. Miss Burke was in perfect touch from the first ball. She won the first three games without the loss of a point, and finished a love set in 12 minutes. She drove with splendid direction and good pace, on both forehand and backhand. She scored many points with superb passing shots when her opponent came to the net. Miss Faulkner played well in the second set, but Miss Burke was always in command. Miss E. Becroft (NZ) was to have played her first-round match to-day, but rain prevented it. These two games were set down for to-day because. Misses Burke and Becroft have to play in the Senior Singles to-mor-row when the championship proper begins. The New Zealand players have been practising against inter-State women representatives for the last two days, and they have shown improved form.
