Police And Firemen Oust Students From Ancient Ghent Castle

Rec. 9 p.m. PAT? I .'? Nov 17 Cheered on by chuckling crowds, armed police and firemen with nos.s and ladders yesterday stormed Ghent’s ancient Castle of the Counts. The “ enemy ” were 100 Ghent University students, who had fr, w elderly warders and taken possession of the castle. From the battlements the students whistled and called to the people down' in the street, but when the police arrived they opened up with a barrage of rotten tomatoes, apples, stink bombs and rockets. The first attempt by a small group of police to get the students out failed badly, so armed gendarmes and firemen were hustled up. For two hours the Rattle ebbed and flowed, the air heavy with assorted fruit, stink bombs and soaring jets of water from fire hoses. Finally the attackers breached the defences and pinned the students in the big Gothic hall. Most of the students were arrested and some were slightly injured.
