NEWS OF THE DAY

“ Pastor Niemoller Prize ” Advice was received by the Otago High Schools Board yesterday that Dr P. Oestreicher had made a donation to the King’s High School Prize Fund for promoting the work of the school library. Dr Oestreicher asked that a prize should be given to the most industrious and efficient senior librarian of the school. He intended making arrangements for an annual award, and suggested that in commemoration of the visit of Pastor Niemoller to the school the’prize be called the “ Pastor Niemoller Prize.” The board decided to thank Dr Oestreicher for his gift. Port Chalmers Highway “ I have been with the Highways Board this afternoon, and it has practically finalised preparations for the Dunedin-Port Chalmers highway,” said the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, at his election meeting in the Town Hall last night. “Next year £30,000 will be spent on that highway.” Bequests Under Will

Under the will of Samuel Berryman, of Wellington, the residue of his estate passes to the following charitable purposes equally:—Mother Aubert Home of Compassion Trust Board for the Home of Compassion, Island Bay, Wellington; the Baptist Union of New Zealand; and the New Zealand Red Cross Society. It is expected that the amount which will be available for each charity will be approximately £ 1400. Mail In Millions Between now and Christmas, the Post and Telegraph Department expects, about 65,000,000 postal articles will be handled throughout the Dominion. To encourage early postings, posters are being exhibited at all offices and will shortly appear on some of the department’s vehicles. Small posters are also being supplied to some large shops, the theme being, “ Shop Early—Post Early." Bees Swarm In Car

A Napier motorist was taken aback when he went to his parked car a few days ago and found a swarm of bees passively but incontestably in possession of the vehicle. After critically surveying the situation for a few minutes, the motorist expertly sorted out the stingless queen bee and placed her in a box. Within a few minutes the members of her court had followed her into the new hive. The lid was closed and the motorist drove off. Speedy Loading

Because the master of the overseas ship Hertford had spoken in such glowing terms of the work of the Port Chalmers watersiders in despatching the ship promptly, he thought the board should express its appreciation, said Mr W. J. Winefield at a meeting of the Otago Harbour Board last night. Mr S. B. Macdonald remarked that the Dunedin watersiders had got a ship away ahead of schedule yesterday. “ but there would be no story in the paper abotit that.” A reporter had just happened to be “down there last time,” Mr Macdonald maintained.

South Island Interest* “We know there is .going to be an election, but it is pleasing to see what the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, is going to do for the South Island,” said the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr E. H. Andrews, at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. Mr Semple had said that the South Island had great possibilities, and these remarks were much appreciated by those who had worked hard to have the South Island recognised. “We will have to wait, however, because we do not know that Mr Semple will be there,” Mr Andrews added. Accidents To Children

An investigation of accident admission figures of some of the largest hospitals in New Zealand had shown an amazing number of children in the one and two-year-old group, said Dr Helen Deem, chief medical adviser to the Plunket Society, in an address in Wellington. Seventeen hundred children of these ages were admitted to hospital in New Zealand each year, she added. Of the accidents to those young children, 75 per cent, involved burns and scalds. The electric jug was the most dangerous appliance in the house. Dr Deem showed an electric jug fitted into a safety device which clamped on to the table as did a mincer. She also urged that parents should provide mesh -guards for all electric radiators.
