BRABIN SHIELD

Nominations Reviewed The North Otago Cricket Association lias this year forwarded the names of five young promising players to the Otago Association for consideration for selection in the Otago Brabin Shield team, for players under 21 years of age. This is by far the largest number of nominations forwarded by the North Otago Association, but the players nominated have shown consistent form over the past two seasons.

I. 11. Burrows, last year’s Otago and South Island captain, should again be assured of his place in the team. To date he lias scored 104 runs this season, at an average of 21 per innings, and has captured 11 wickets at the cost of 11.72 runs each. Last year he performed well in matches for the Otago team, and also in the South v. North Island match.

M. Sandri (Albion) lias played senior cricket for the past two seasons, and in that time lie has improved considerably. As a bowler this snson he has been very effective, and his 13 wickets to date, taken in five innings, have cost on an average 9.2 runs each. Last season he took 26 wickets and his batting average stood at 27.45. 1. T. Geddes has shown consistent form over the past two seasons while playing for the Waitaki first eleven. More so this year, as to date he has scored 231 runs at an average of 57.75 per innings, including a century. Last year he kept wickets for the Waitaki team for the greater part of the season. C. P. Johnston, who is perhaps Waitaki’s best all-rounder, excluding Burrows, claimed 23 wickets at a cost of 9 runs each last year, as well as making 280 runs at an average of 25.45 per innings. To date lie has taken nine wickets this season, and has made 123 runs in five innings. R J. Blakely has shown a remarkable rise in cricket since he was included in the Waitaki first eleven at the beginning of this year. He has been very successful as a slow bowler, and lias made some good scores this season, his highest being 54 against Oamaru A. Players with performances such as these should receive full consideration when the team is finally selected.

The draw for Saturday is:— Senior.—Oamaru B v. Albion. Waitaki v. Union. Oamaru A and St. Kevin’s will play a one-day. non-competition match, commencing at 1 p.m. . Junior.—2nd NZEF v. Waitaki C, at King George's Park: Albion v. St. Patrick’s, at Waitaki: Union v. Waitaki B, at King George’s Park; Railway v. Waitaki A. at Waitaki. Waitaki Ain the Third Grade has been re-graded to junior to eliminate the bye. and will now play in the Junior Competition as Waitaki C. Third Grade. —Enfield v. .Waitaki C at Waitaki: St. Kevin’s A v. St. Patricks, at St. Kevin’s: St. Kevin’s B v. Waitaki B, at St. Kevin’s. . Difficulty has been experienced, especially in the lower grades, in decinhering many of the entries both in the hatting scores and bowling analysis. A little more care would result in a much more speedy handling of cricket results and would eliminate to a great extent the possibility of errors occurring in the publication of reports. Many of the bowing analyses are are so incomplete that lliey do not tally with the total score, in some cases to the tune 9! between 20 and 30 runs. Team captains are remiested to hand in cricket books to the Daily Times ofiiCe on Saturday night as soon after the completion of matches as ™ . The step taken bv the association m asking Kurow to withdraw. f r°m the senior competition end in inviting St. Kevin's to enter this competition will undoubtedly have the effect of improving the standard of cricket at the college. The inconvenience caused by Kurow defaulting last season was well known to the association at its annual meeting and this Should have been borne in mind when the senior competition for this year was under consideration. Although the decision to ask Kurow to withdraw may not be popular with that club, the remainder of the teams in the association s senior competition had to be considered.
