EXAMPLE TO WORLD
Solution Of Anglo-Indian
Problems
FRIENDLY CO-OPERATION
Rec. 9.20 p.m. OTTAWA, Oct. 25. Pandit Nehru, Prime Minister of India, declared to-day that the rest of the world might well pay heed to the example set by the solution of the problems between India and Britain. He said the conflict of “Indian nationalism and British imperialism ” had been succeeded by friendly cooperation. The solution was a real one because it did not lead to other problems. When India became a republic shortly her co-operation with the Commonwealth would have greater strength because it would be inspired and sustained by the free will of free peoples. Asked whether India intended to ease Britain’s sterling balances, Mr Nehru said: “As the pei-son responsible for India’s affairs, I obviously cannot increase the burden on my people.” He said that India’s sterling balances were the result of a period of “ great deprivation ” for the Indian people. They had supplied goods at less than market price and the dollars so earned had been converted into sterling. The whole economic policy behind the sterling balances had led to the Bengal famine, in which 3,000,000 people perished.
