EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
FROM THE FILES OF THE ©taqo IDatl\> Himes DUNEDIN, pCTOBER 26, 1864. We learn from our Wellington correspondent that the recently acquired block of land at Waitotara, Wellington, has found favour in the eyes of some Dunedin sepeculators, and that 1500 acres had been applied for by one individual from this city. A correspondent of the Southern Cross states that a force of about 300 rebel Natives is in the vicinity of the new township of Alexandra, in the Waikato district, and that they were building a strong pah within a few miles of the camp. A meeting of intending members of the Dunedin City Rifle Corps was held last evening, wnen it was decided to alter the name of the corps to that of the “ City Rifles,” under which name the corps will in futflre be recognised. The number of gentlemen present augurs well for the success of the corps.
Our Dunstan correspondent, besides detailing the success achieved by the miners of the district, gives some interesting information of the mode of working the varieties of ground found in the district. Judged from his account, fresh discoveries are being constantly made, the aggregation of which, though each may he of itself comparatively unimportant, forms a promising field for remunerative labour.
The steamer Hobart brought, on her last passage from Melbourne some very fine sheep stock both to Southland and to this province. At Bluff she landed 120 very superior rams for Mr Christopher Basstian and Mr Harvey, and at this port Captain Darby has landed five very fine picked specimens of De Grove’s Ramboullies, which are accompanied by the usual certificates of pedigree. They are now in Mr Martin’s yard for inspection, and are intended to be sold at an early data.
