The University Club yesterday placed on record its deep regret at the death of the former vice-chancellor, Mr W. Downie Stewart, and reference was made in a special minute to his interest in the University and the manner in which he had worked for its advancement. Last night’s meeting of the City Council confirmed that Crs Sidey and Smith and the city librarian should be the delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand Library Association In Wellington next February. Messrs E. J. Smith, H. I. Sinclair and J. Wilson were re-elected at last evening’s City Council meeting as the council’s representatives on the Management Committee of the Otago Museum. The moderator of the Presbyterian Church, the Right Rev. C. J. Tocker, will arrive in Dunedin by car to-day. He will leave for the North Island on Thursday. Mr B. F. Waters, the chairman of the Social Security Commission and secretary for war pensions, will be in Dunedin next Monday to interview any pensioners or beneficiaries who wish to discuss their cases with him. The resignation of Miss C. H. MacGibbon as senior lecturer in foods and institutional management at tire Home Science School was accepted at yesterday’s meeting of ths University Council. Congratulations on her approaching marriage and regret that the school should be losng her services were expressed. Reference to the • death of Mr -W. Downie Stewart was made at the meeting of the Dunedin Returned Services’ Executive last night. The president, Mr D. L. Wood, said Mr Stewart had always been a loyal friend and helper of the association. Members stood as a mark of respect.
