DEATH OF MR ALEX. SLIGO

A well-known figure in business, lodge and sporting circles in the city, Mr Alex. Sligo, died on Saturday morning at the age of 74 years. Mr v Sligo was the son of Mr Alexander S Sligo, M.L.C. He was educated in Dunedin, and was- for many years associated with the printing firm of Mills, Dick. Apart from his interest in the printing and stationery trade, Mr Sligo was prominent in the affairs of the Kaikorai Tram Company, being chairman of directors for many years. The

company was acquired by the City Corporation just prior to the recent war. He was chairman of directors of the Dunedin Starr-Bowkett So"'ciety, and was also interested in the gold mining industry in Otago. Mr Sligo for many years was one s of the best-known officials of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows in Otago. He joined the Hand and Heart Lodge ,in 1896. He was provincial grand master of the ' Order in 1917-18, provincial treasurer .from 1921 to 1938, and secretary from ,'1938 to 1946. He was also prominent “in the affairs of the United Friendly Societies’ Dispensary Committee. Outside of Oddfellowship, Mr Sligo was keenly interested in sport and social organisations. He was captain of the 1898 Soccer representative team, and was an enthusiastic tramper. He was also a member of the Commercial Travellers’ Club and the Orphans’ Club. He is survived by his widow and two daughters by an earlier marriage. The funeral will take place this afternoon. MR G. R. HUNTER, M.L.C. ‘ PA .CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 23. The death has occurred of Mr George Robert Hunter, M.L.C. Born in Victoria, Australia, in 1884, Mr Hunter spent some years in mining at Rutherglen, where he was a friend of Mr P. C. Webb. Mr Hunter came to New Zealand in 1908. He was secretary of the State Coal Miners’ Union from 1910. Mr Hunter was the first town clerk'of the Runanga borough, and in 1929 he moved to Christchurch, where for some years he was a member of the City Council and the Drainage Board. =He was the owner of several racehorses. Mr Hunter was called to the Legislative Council in 1930. m
