Australia To Develop New Guinea And Papua
NZPA—Copyright Rec. 9 p.m. CANBERRA, Oct. 16. The Federal Government plans to make Papua and 'New Guinea a link in the chain of Pacific defence. Millions of pounds will be spent during the next 10 years developing the territories to provide cocoa, tea. and coffee.
The decision follows reports that the territories contain vast resources, including rubber, copra, timber, and probably big reservoirs of oil. Under Government encouragement, the. drive to find oil has already met hopeful signs, and the Dutch have already discovered oil in their New Guinea territory.
