STUDY IN DESIGN

“ House To Stay At Home In ” BUILT BY STUDENTS To harassed *home-builders throughout the country, a demonstration house built by members of the Architectural Centre at, Karori, Wellington, which is to be opened this afternoon, should be of exceptional interest. The project was begun last December to give the centre’s students an insight into modern building methods. Designed as a result of group study by the students themselves, the house has been built largely with volunteer labour at the week-ends, and large quantities of the material and equipment were given or lent by merchants. The house, which covers 1225 square feet, comprises living room, kitchen, combined bathroom-laundry, three bedrooms, utility rooms and playroom. These take the form of a horse-shoe with the open end facing a hillside so as to form a private patio, giving ample sunshine but protected from the wind. Its designers claim that though less economical to build than the conventional type of house, the higher standard of living and the greater inducement to family life more than compensate for the increased initial outlay. Described as a “ house-to-stay-at-home-in ” it makes almost unnecessary week-end joy-riding or out of town excursions. The house is framed and sheathed in insignis pine and wide use has been made of native timbers for finishing. Most of the furniture has been built in and the remainder has been chosen with a veiw to maximum utility and good design.-
