Dominion-wide Check On Faulty Motor Vehicles
PA WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. To ensure that all motor vehicles are in the best possible mechanical condition prior to the coming Christmas holiday season, organised checks are to be made on faulty brakes in a New Zealand-wide drive.
Announcing this to-day, the Minister of Transport, Mr Hackett, said that at the same time warrants of fitness and general mechanical details would be checked.
“No one can hope to drive with safety in a car that is not 100 per cent, mechanically sound,” said the Minister. “ It is anticipated that the road traffic during the homing holiday season will be heavier than ever before experienced in this country, and everything must be done to reduce the possibility of accident. Instructions nave been issued to traffic officers of the Transport Department to commence this drive from October 15. Where a vehicle is found to be in a faulty condition a traffic offence notice will be issued, and the offender will be liable to prosecution." Mr Hackett strongly urged all drivers who have any faults in their vehicle to put them right immediately.
