MYSTERIOUS DEATH ON NEW LINER

The mysterious death of a man on , . board the New Zealand Shipping Com- « pany’s new liner, Rangitoto, on her first night in port provided a puzzle for the Auckland police to-night. The man, aged about 35, was found unconscious on the stewards’ mess deck at 8 p.m. with a deep gash in his head, and, although he received attention, he . .//was dead when the police arrived. :•••.* ..a A member of the crew who had been with several others in a nearby cabin found the injured man, and* Sister E. ■V-. Grose, a member of the ship’s comVncpanJ’, bandaged the man’s head and felt a slight pulse. Shortly afterward - - *the police and an ambulance arrived, but the man was then- dead. / None of the ship’s company is reported, to have heard anything before the finding of the body. The man was not recognised as a member of the company, and it is not known how. ~ ,he came to be on board the ship.. He / 1" /was dressed like a seaman. There was iJ * ,<l a pool of blood at the bottom of the iron gangway leading down to the mess deck, and there were spots of blood about the corridor. The Rangitoto, which is on her .. /’maiden voyage, arrived at Auckland " from Wellington this morning.
