WITHDRAWAL BEGINS
Dutch Troops In Northern Indonesia NZPA —Reuter—Copyright BATAVIA, Oct. .13. The Dutch Army to-day began the withdrawal of forces from territory north and north-west of the Republican capital of Jogjakarta, an army communique stated. The area being evacuated was occupied by the Dutch in the second “ police action ” in December last year. Military observers commented tonight that Dutch outposts and forward patrols began a withdrawal several days ago, but the main movement of Dutch troops slowly northward began to-day. * The Dutch still hold in force vital communication centres in East and Central Java, such as Magelang and Soerakarta.
Indonesian political circles stated tonight that the area evacuated would be occupied immediately by Republican troops. The total area involved in the evacuation embraces 625 square miles. Meanwhile the Soerakarta, Magelang. and Bajomas areas remain the storm centres, with frequent clashes reported between the Dutch and the guerrillas.
