Death In Australia Of Mr Sydney U. Smith SYDNEY, Oct. 11. The death has occurred of Mr Sydney Ure Smith, 0.8. E., artist, editor and publisher, at the age of 62. Mr Smith, who was born in Stoke, Newington, London, was educated at Queen’s College (Melbourne) and the Sydney Grammar School. He studied art under Julian Ashton and • later founded the publications, Art in Australia and The Home. He resigned as editor of these journals in 1938 and founded the Ure Smith Pty., Ltd., publishers of Australia National Journal, Australia Week-end Book, Australian Present-day Art and other publications- . ~ Mr Smith was a trustee of the National Art Gallery of New South Wales and a director of the EmpireUSA Art Trust. He was awarded the Society of Artists’ medal in 1931. Some of Mr Smith’s etchings and water-colour drawings are hung in the National Art Galleries in the four main Australian cities, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, and the New York Public Library.
