KEENLY CONTESTED BARRIER TRIALS AT INVERCARGILL

Special to tlhe Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Oct. 13. Horses with engagements at the Gore spring meeting figured prominently in a series of barrier trials held on the v Southland Racing Club’s course this morning, and conducted by the Southland branch of the Racing Owners, Trainers and Breeders’ Association.

Chief interest was shown in the open seven-furlong trial, in which Excellency, Eriskay, Aganev, Sir Garnish, Gunther and All Alone took part. G,unther and Aganev were slow on the journey, and S 1» Garnish was first out from Excellency, Eriskay and All Alone. All Alone and Sir Garnish were first into the straight, being clear of Excellency and Eriskay at the head of the others. All Alone, Excellency and Sir Garnish passed the post with half heads separating them in the order named, with Eriskay three lengths back and another three lengths to Aganev. The seven was run in Imin 31sec. Turora neat the open sprinters over six furlongs after being prominently placed throughout. He was one of the on the journey, and at the straight entrance he was disputing the year with Waicoe clear of Mr Micawber, Spare Part and Pageantry making up ground after being last out from the barrier. Waicoe did not run on, and Turora was soon clear, winning decisively by two lengths from Pageantry, who got up to beat Mr Micawber by a neck. Jimmy the One was two lengths away fourth, with Spart Part next. The last half was run in 50 2-ssec. / Two-year-olds

Purple Sage beat nine two-year-olds in a run over three furlongs and a-half pointlessly after being in front throughout. Purple Sage was not troubled to beat Lawrence by three leneth, with Rosehaven three lengths back third. Angelus was a head away fourth, with Christian d’Or and a Hello Peter—Brolack colt next, The time was 42sec. Uist (Nizami —Foxette), Formation and Double Boa finished in that order, with heads separating thsm, in the first novice division over-six furlongs. Double Boa and Formation were first into the straight, but Uist finished strongly to gain a narrow decision. The Lo Zingaro—Carolyn filly was close up fourth, with a break to Miss Vivian The six was run in lmin 19 l-ssec, the last four in 52 l-ssec.

In the second novice division Hyflyer won well after being one of the leaders throughout. Hyflyer was first into the straight from Nazomi, Wandering Light, Censure and Royal Colleen. In the run home Hyflyer always had the upper hand to beat Nazomi by three-quarters of a length, with Wandering Light three lengths back third. Censure was six lensths away fourth, with Royal Colleen next. The six was run in lmin 19 4-ssec. the last half in 52 4-ssec. Screw Picket Narrowly Heads separated Screw Picket, Lady Claret and Free Gift in the third novice division. ‘At the straight entrance Lady Claret was closely attended by Free Gift, Coney Park, Robing Return and Screw Picket, moving up. Screw Picket got up to beat Lady Claret by a head, with Free Gift a head back third. Zintui was six lengths back fourth, with Sea Beacon and Pimento next. The six was run in lmin 20sec, the first two in 25 2-ssec. Night Rider finished strongly to win the first division of the hack sprint, run over six furlongs, with Plausible, who was doing her work well within herself, a good second. Shadamai was a neck back third, and Glenlivet half a length away fourth, with Gay Prince next. The six was run in lmin 17sec. Bragden made no race of the second division, and he won easily by four lengths in lmin 17 l-ssec, the last-lour in 51 l-ssec. Bragden was clear into the straight, where Anzora, Gipsy Major, Oscillate and Wint headed the others. Bragden came right away to win comtortably from Oscillate, who ?ot up to beat Anzora by a head for second, with Wint a length and a-half back fourth.

The most interesting workout at Forbury Park yesterday morning was a mile and a-half in which Maudeen, Lady Averil. and Double Deck were associated. Maudeen set the pace, but the other two closed on her in the run home and there was little between them at the post. They went 3min 21sec and it was a good effort on the part of Double Peck, who should return to the winning list before long.
