SEALING OF ROAD
Access To Boys’ High School
The question of sealing the road from the railway line to the rear of the Hall of Memories at the Waitaki Boys’ High School, as recommended by the secondary schools' property supervisor, was discussed at yesterday's meeting of the Waitaki High School Board of Governors. Mr D. V. G.' Smith, the secretary, stated he had obtained an estimate from Fulton and Hogan of £489 for the work, and a further estimate of £370 for the sealing of the roadway in front of the school. The estimates had been sent to Wellington for consideration, but so far no reply had been received. The Rev. A. Marshall was in the chair and there were also present Mrs M. E. Berry. Messrs C. F. Ridger, D. S. Bain and W. Meldrum.
Advice was received from the department that it was not in favour of the introduction of learner-shearer classes at the Boys’ High School at the present time. Mr Ridger said it was essential that the boys should learn the correct methods of shearing. The farmers of the district should know of the department’s attitude. The letter was referred to MrJ. Kingan for his consideration.
Grants of £25 10s lor a filing cabinet. £23 9s 3d for staging materials and'£lß for commercial equipment at the girls’ school and £561 for extensions to the gymnasium at the Waitaki Boys’ High School were approved by the department.
No further advice was received from the department as to the repairs to be carried out to the baths at the girls’ school. It was decided that further investigations be carried out at the baths by board members before the department’s inspector made his inspection. Mr Smith reported that he had interviewed Mr Nordmeyer while in Wellington on the proposed cycle track along the railway line from Waitaki avenue to Orwell street. Mr Nordmeyer said he would be willing to attend the proposed meeting of local bodies while in Oamaru and discuss the project, as he was conversant with the situation. Miss E. M. Menzies was appointed clerical assistant to Miss J. B. Wilson. Leave of absence was granted Miss Pollard and the resignations of Miss R. M. Allan and Mrs E. D. Blackler were accepted. A letter was received from Mrs Blackler stating that the fire equipment at the girls’ hostel was in need of overhaul, and it was decided to ask the superintendent of the Oamaru Fire Brigade to inspect and report on the state of the fire fighting equipment at both schools.
