HEALTH STAMPS

SALES INCREASED CROMWELL AND TARRAS VALUE OF COMMITTEES Just what can be achieved in the sale of health stamps when a committee takes an active interest in the campaign has been clearly established in the Cromwell area. The total sales there amounted to-'only £l3 14s 3d in 1943-44, and £l3 19s in 1944-45. A small committee was set up in 1945-46 and sales increased to £Bl 15s that year. The Cromwell Committee was strengthened in 1946-47, and sales increased to £125 ss. In 1947-48, the Cromwell sales reached £154 3s 6d, and those at Tarras (where there was as yet no committee), £7 16s, making a total of £l6l 19s 6d. Last year a committee was also established at Tarras, and the sales for 1948-49 were £2OO 5s at Cromwell Jind £63 8s 9d at Tarras, making a total of £263 13s 9d.

From these figures, members of the two committees consider it is evident that much can be done when committees representing the various organisations in a town and district combine in the worthy object of promoting the sale of health stamps for children’s health camps. There are many districts in Otago where the health stamp quota of sales is not achieved each year, and possibly only an active committee is needed to interest the people in the campaign. One of the ways of creating interest at Cromwell is the exhibition in shop windows of framed and autographed “ first-day ” covers. Only one “ firstday ” cover is so autographed each year. The stamps are purchased by the chairman of the Cromwell Committee, Mr William Partridge, who is also the Mayor, and' after they are

affixed to the first-day cover, the stamps are cancelled by the postmaster, “Mr D. Murray, who is also secretary of the committee. The cover is then autographed by the Mayor, councillors and town clerk, and the cover is framed. It is then displayed in shop windows, together with the framed autographed covers from previous years." The covers were prepared by Miss V. I. I. Hood, an employee of the Post and Telegraph Department. Members of the Cromwell Committee will also autograph firstday covers in future. The Cromwell Committee comprises Mr W. Partridge, Mr G. Wishart, Dr R. E. Austin, Mr T. M. Ellis, Mr A. S. Campbell, who was succeeded by Mr E. Edmiston. Mr D. Murray, Mr J. A. Storey. Mr W. E. McLachlan, Mr L. G. Billcliff, Constable R. S. Rusbatch, Mr G. Summers, Mr F. W. Orme (Bannockburn), Mrs J. Radford and Mr M. C. Esson. The Tarras Committee consists of Messrs W. D. Naylor (chairman), John Colling, C. Griffiths, W. J. Rowley, and the .■ postmistress, Miss Freda Scott.
