Winner of the Otaki Shield which was presented by the relatives of the late Captain Archibald Bissett-Smith V.C., a former pupil of the college, Mr Rettie left England on July 5 and is due to sail again on September l 2o. This will allow him to enter the University of Aberdeen without seriously interfering with his - studies for he left school towards the close of the last term and during the University’s long vacation. Explaining the system of selection. Mr Rettie said that character, leadership and athletics were all considered. “At least that's what it says on the schedule," he added. The headmaster made the final selection and the winner naturally felt thrilled with the prospect of a four, month’s holiday* There was one slight drawback however—the winner had sometimes to make a speech at the schools he visited. This depended largely on the school, he added, with a rather hopeful glance towards Mr E. J. Aim, rector of the Otago Boy r s’ High School who met the visitor on his arrival yesterday. While in Dunedin Mr Rettie will be the guest of the school and will stay at the home of one of the prefects. J. A. Fairmaid. After visiting local secondary schools and the University of Otago he will leave for Invercargill to-morrow.
