EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tago ©atl\> Unties DUNEDIN, AUGUST 12, 1864. For some time past the dangerous condition of the flags on the footpath in front of the Police Barracks has been a constant subject of remark and complaint among foot passengers in Princes street south. On one side of the pathway the path has sunk at least a foot, and the flags on the upper side are ail loose, and act as a kind of -trap for passengers. The keeping of this footpath, in order is the duty of the Government, and we recommend ft to their early attention.
The New Zealand Gazette of July 20 contains the following appointments in the Postal Service in the Province of Otago:—Archibald McKinlay, to be Postmaster at Gabriel’s Gully from April 1. 1864; Gustavus Carlbach, to be Postmaster at Black's Diggings from May 1, 1864; Joseph Bremner. to be Postmaster at Hamilton’s from May 10, 1864; Thomas Turner, to be Postmaster at Blackstone Hill from May 18, 1864.
•"? Mr Warden Charles Broad, in his official report from Hamilton’s. Taieri, • of August 6, states:—“The continued . Billing of the Molyneux has decreased " the population here during the past ‘-week. Hyde, however, has been little •.’affected by it, some of the claims turning out excessively rich, and men , r are constantly arriving and taking up fresh ground. The confidence in the permanency of this field is shown by the considerable expense many have been at in fetching timber for slabbing, and in my opinion the present Hyde workings are only the nucleus of a very extensive and permanent gold field. The races are again running and the frost has disappeared. At Hindon two parties of three have made application to turn the Taieri River about 500 yards from its junction with Christmas Creek. The estimated population is 2685.”
