SMUGGLING OF TREASURE ALLEGED
CANBERRA. Allegations that thousands of pounds' worth of art treasures looted from France and American-occupied Germany were being smuggled into Australia were made by Customs officials in Melbourne, it was stated in the House of Representatives recently.
A member said it was also alleged that costly art pieces, valuable paintings and silverware had been seized from displaced person migrants, and that these displaced persons had been paid colossal sums to smuggle goods into Australia. The Minister for Commerce, Mr R T Pollard, said he would make inquiries to see whether the reports were true. —Reuter.
