HEATING SYSTEMS
Sir,—The reply of Cr Wright to my letter is hardly satisfactory. Why try to put the blame on the Government? The City Counqil, at enormous cost, has raised the height of the Mahinerangi dam and is prepared, even at more cost, to install more generating stations. At the same time, the council has installed at the Municipal Electricity Building in Cumberland street, a system of heating which is absurdly extravagant in its demands for power, and has allowed a similar, but much larger, system to be Installed at the Medical School block, while ratepayers are denied a supply of power for water heating during the winter months. Manufacturers have installed, at enormous cost, standby plants to reduce the load during periods of water shortages, and the Electricity Station and Medical School block should be compelled to use fuel when hydro-power is scarce—they should be allowed to use the electric heating only when water is running to waste. This is much the cheapest way of alleviating, to at least a small extent, the present shortage.—l am, etc.. Fair Play.
