GARDINER BEATS ANDERSON The eight-round professional catchweight bout between Max Gardiner mamaru) 10,9 and Jack Anderson (Dunedin) 10.6 J was dignified by its designation for neither boxer impressed as being up to good amateur championship standard. Both men, however, did indulge in some fiercely-contested exchanges, and their heavy slogging was appreciated by th Gardiner towered above his opponent, who was having his first professional contest but Anderson made the mistake of standing off and trying to box the Oamaru man at long range. He paid the pen sltv, as his punches were often snort, Anderson was fairly evasive, but could not keep the energetic Gardiner out. The Oamaru boxer was an awkward opponent but he, too, did too much inaccurate hitting in- the earlier stages, though when he found his distance and measured Anderson off. he connected with some good lefts and inside rights, also with rights to the body. ' Over the first three rounds there was not a great deal of clean punching, • but both men livened up in the fourth round, in which Gardiner Continued to carry the fight to his opponent. Anderson connected with an occasional left hook and right uppercut to the jaw,' but Gardiner kept on top, and in the seventh round sent Anderson to the canvas with an inside right to the jaw. The Dunedin boxer took a count of nine, and though he fought back gamely, condition was beating him, and when he took another count of seven the refreee, Mr S Paris, stopped the fight and awarded it' to. Gardiner on a technical knock-out. The judges for both professional bouts were Messrs B. M. Morris and C. E. Brown.
