AUCKLAND PLANS
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE ' EXTENSION CABINET GIVES APPROVAL PA AUCKLAND, June 20. Cabinet approval in principle of the development of a university college at Tamaki was received by the Auckland University College Council to-day. The Minister of Education, Mr McCombs, in a letter which was referred to the policy committee for a report, set out four provisos ma'de by Cabinet. The provisos were that no further buildings should be erected for college purposes on the Princes street site or elsewhere in the city, that the council should re-examine its general development plan submitted and indicate which part of the whole scheme it proposed to develop in the reasonably nqar future, that the council should advise the Minister as soon as possible which building it placed first in priority for erection at Tamaki and that it should be clearly understood that for the next few years at least only one major building could i proceed at a time. “I do not think you will find these provisos unreasonable,” the Minister said. “They mean, in essence, that if your council agrees to accept the terms on which approval has been given, all future buildings will be concentrated on the Tamaki site. As you know it is not possible with the present shortage of labour and materials to entertain any proposal for the erection of more than one major building at a time “It is a very important matter and we have waited a long' time for a decision from the Government,” said the president, Mr W. H. Cocker. “ When this came. before the council originally, we approved of the Tamaki scheme but at that time I understood that a substantial part of the college activity would be transferred at one time. It appears now that, at least for a period due to the present building conditions, it will be possible to erect only one major building at one time."
