Sydney Wins Athletic Tournament Against the New Zealand University

NZPA—Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. SYDNEY, June 1. The Sydney University Athletic Club defeated the combined New Zealand universities’ team at the University this afternoon by 36 points to 31. Conditions were bad, with a heavy sodden ground, and it was doubtful until early afternoon whether the tournament would be held. In the 100 Yards the New Zealander. D. R. Batten, got away well and was on even terms with the Australian champion, J. Treloar, until the final burst, when Treloar drew ahead and won by two yards. In the 220 Yards, Batten was in a good position when he pulled a leg musde and had to drop out. Treloar, who was running his first 220 yards this season, won easily. In spite of the absence of Batten, the New Zealanders scored magnificently in the Mile Relay, mainly due to the notable effort of J. D. Sinclair.. Running the first half-mile he drew steadily away from the others and finished first in his leg by over 20 yards. J. Millar increased the distance, giving Treloar an impossible task at the finish. The time, 3min 35|sec, was a remarkable one considering the condition of the track. Details are:— ' Shot Putt. —J. Butters 1, D. Culav (New Zealand) 2, G. Gilmour (New Zealand) 3.
