NAVAL PRIZE MONEY
£4,000,000 AWAITS DISTRIBUTION Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, June 1. The distribution of £4,000,000 Royal Navy prize money will begin to-day and more than 650,000 officers and ratings will benefit. A further £1,250,000 is available for the Royal Air Force but this will go to the RAF Benevolent and Welfare Funds.
A highest allocation of £4O for an admiral compares with £3OOO after the *First World War. A captain will draw only £l6 compared with £BOO. Women will participate for the first time and about 30 Wrens who served on the staffs of convoy commodores are eligible. The naval correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that a total of £5,250,000 is about two-thirds of the prize proceeds accruing to Britain under the Commonwealth agreement. The other third goes to the Exchequer. I The Commonwealth will draw about ! £2.000,000. * Nearly £15,000,000 was distributed by the navy after the First World War*. In the last war German strategy l of scuttling ships before possible capture kept the number of prizes com- ' paratively low.
