Courageous Lacks Nothing in Stamina

Courageous put up an outstanding performance to win the Ellesmere Handicap at the Canterbury Park meeting last Saturday and he is one of the most frequently discussed candidates for the Durbar Handicap at Ashburton. With six furlongs to run he was giving the leaders a good start and even at the straight entrance Flinders Bar had a useful break on him. He finished exceptionally well, however, and won by a length going away. His two previous wins were over two miles so that he is not lacking in stamina. A four-year-old by Light Brigade from War Lass, by Man o’ War from a Harold Dillon mare, Courageous may be one of W. R. Butt’s most successful performers during the season. Jottings Fillmore is coming back to form and is likely tc pay expenses at Ashburton. Gav Note was unlucky in the Fendalton' Handicap last Saturday and may be more prominent at Ashburton. Strong Hand The Addington trainer, J. Young, has a strong hand in the Autumn Handicap at Ashburton with Almeta and Novacord. Suffering from Cold Burns Night was withdrawn from the Juvenile Handicap at the Canterbury Park meeting last Saturday because he was suffering from a cold. In Sapling Stakes Gowan Globe, a candidate for the Sapling Stakes at Ashburton, is a bay colt by Springfield,,' Globe from Tapdancer, by Acron from a Harold Dillon mare, his second dam being Miss Effie Bells, by Abbey Bells from Effie, by Electioneer. At the Canterbury Park meeting last Saturday he lost any chance he may have had by breaking at the start.
