RICCARTON TEAM FOR WINGATUI

With 35 horses from here due to race on the first day, Riccarton stables have a strong contingent for the Dunedin meeting. Colonel Smart went south after being sent to Washdyke before the South Canterbury meeting. G. Barr left last night with his five horses, and the remainder of the team from here will travel south by rail or road during the next day or two.

Though Newspaper is missing from the first day’s acceptances for the Dunedin meeting, he will go to Wingatui next week to race on the final day. R. E. Johnstone will take Braemar when he goes to Wingatui. He has dropped out of ,the Trial Stakes, in which the two-year-old, Prince Defaulter will represent the stable.' Braemar will be a starter on tlie second day. Golden Air, a candidate for staying hack races at the Dunedin meeting, will run on the last day in the Aldworth Handicap. This event is for amateur riders, and it is expected that he will be ridden by Mr J. Hall, who keeps himself fit by regular attendance at Riccartdn to ride work.

Bravura, who will be missing from the field for the Otago Steeplechase, is training on well and he may make his appearance at Trentham next month. C. McDonald will resume riding this week at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. He has been off the scene since

Easter Monday, when he won the Great Easter Handicap on Citril and later in the day was operated'on for appendicitis. K. Thomson, who for the last few years has been prominent as a jumping rider, has applied for a trainer’s licence. The first horse he will have to train is Mr H. D. Humphries intends to send them to Wingatui next week to race on the final day. L. J. Ellis has refused two rides on the first day of the Dunedin meeting and he will not make the trip to Wingatui.
