SENIOR INSPECTOR
MR R- W. D. MAXWELL’S DEATH LONG EDUCATIONAL CAREER Mr Robert Wyndham Devitt Maxwell, who died in Dunedin yesterday morning, had been senior inspector of schools in the Otago Educational district since 1946. and for some years previously he was an inspector here. Mr Maxwell was born in Christchurch, and received his education at St. Alban’s School, Christchurch Boys’ High School, the Christchurch Teachers' Training College and Canterbury University College. He held the degree of master of arts and also the diploma of education. His first teaching appointment was' as sole teacher at Westerfield, South Canterbury, and he returned to Christchurch as an assistant at the Addington School. After being in charge of the model class at the Normal School in Christchurch he went to the West Coast as an organising teacher, and was then appointed lecturer in the principles and practice »of teaching at the Christchurch Training College. His next appointment was as head master of the Hastings West School. Mr Maxwell came to Otago in 1930 as an inspector and he remained here until 1937. when he went to Auckland in a similar position. In 1944 he was transferred to Hawke’s Bay as senior inspector, returning to Dunedin 18 months later. Mr Maxwell was a member of the Mornington Bowling Club and he was also a golfer. He was an enthusiastic gardener. He also took a keen interest in the Hard-of-Hearing League, the Crippled Children Society, and the psychiatric clinic.
