IMPORTERS AGREE
PRESIDENT’S OBSERVATION PA . ROTORUA. May 29.
Commenting on the statements attributed to Mr R. P. Wilson, of the Department of Industries and Commerce on import control policy, Mr E. W. Sinton, president of the Bureau of Importers, said he agreed that the present system of import control, with its mass of detail, was not in the best interests of New Zealand. Mr Sinton agreed that a modified system was necessary while import control lasted, but he could not agree that import control was necessary from the sterling areas. The system outlined by Mr Wilson seemed to echo a letter sent by Mr Sinton to Mr Nash in June last, setting out a simplified procedure which could cut down the present work of importers, the Customs Department, and the banks to approximately 5 per cent., Mr Sinton added. The bureau would welcome a statement from Mr Nash if he were contemplating bringing into operation this modified system.
